SPACE IN YOUR DIET - EXERCISE
For those of us who were born in the U.S. in the mid-20th century, there should have been a sign posted in the delivery room: "Welcome to the couch potato generation." For more reasons than you can count, including the proliferation of telephones, automobiles, television sets and desk jobs in front of computers, many of us have been shifted from our feet to our bottoms. As a result we're overweight, have poor strength, lots of obesity and weakness-associated illnesses, chronic aches and pains, and excessive pent-up tension.
Women are thought to be at greatest risk of many of these problems. Pardy because we are not socialized around sports to the same degree men are, we've traditionally spent more time at home where couch life is readily available. And these days, because so many of us fill multiple life roles that leave little time for recreational, let alone physical activity, we're even more likely to be sedentary. The result? Starting at 25 years of age, experts say we will replace one pound of muscle with one pound of fat each year!
