NUTRITIONAL HELP FOR POOR LIBIDO
Patients often ask me if there is something natural or nutritional they can take to stimulate their flagging libido. Indeed there is, and a suitable diet to provide your sex glands with all the raw materials to manufacture sex hormones is one that contains:
■ Seafoods (unless you suffer with high cholesterol when intake of crustaceans should be limited);
■ Unprocessed grains, nuts, seeds and legumes;
■ Raw salads and raw fruits;
■ Free range eggs — three to four per week;
■ Raw fruit and vegetable juices.
Specific nutritional supplements may also help your sex glands to manufacture hormones and will aid in balancing the biochemistry of the brain centres that are involved with libido and mood control.
These supplements are:
■ Vitamin E in natural form in a dosage of 1,000 international units daily;
■ В complex vitamin tablet, one daily;
■ A zinc supplement, 100 mg daily;
■ Evening Primrose Oil, 3000 mg daily;
■ Amino acid complex, two tablets daily.
All supplements should be taken at the beginning of meals.
IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED . . .
What if, after a checkup, hormone replacement therapy and natural supplements, the libido is still flagging? Firstly, don't give up prematurely as it may be necessary to try several different combinations of hormones and when the right combination is found it may take two to three months to produce the desired effect.
Secondly, take a look at your lifestyle: has it been basically healthy or are you drinking and smoking your sex glands into an early death?
Thirdly, take a look at the quality of communication between you and your partner. Is it blocked by fear, guilt, or poor self-image and low self-esteem, embarrassment, anger, frustration or other negative emotions? If so, you need to go back to basics and receive some counselling from a professional psychologist or doctor who has a special interest in sexual disorders. Such professionals are called sex therapists and this type of counselling can be combined with counselling from a marriage guidance counsellor, if necessary. Your local doctor should be able to refer you to these professionals.
It is a rare individual who will not have some response to these measures. However, if you cannot rekindle the lost flame of passion and desire, it's well to remember that libido normally has its own biorhythms and you may be in a temporary natural low. Take heart, for within the next few months your libido biorhythms may soar.
